About FUYO Inter-School 2009

FUYO Inter-School B-boy Battle (previously known as Floorskillz Inter-School B-boy Battle) is an annual B-boying (commonly known as Breakdancing) Event organized to provide a controlled platform for our local young B-boying & B-girling community to grow and shine.

First started in 2007 with sponsorship from FUYO Productions and Verveparade, this event is aimed to bring about the future generations of Singapore Bboying scene. Specially tailored for Singapore's younger generation of dancers, this event serves as a official competition for schools to participate and utilize their enthusiasm for B-boying in a controlled and yet expressive manner.

Into its 3nd year, FUYO Inter-School B-boy Battle 2009 serves to help Singapore school students who aspire to be more professional B-boys & B-girls work towards their dreams in an official competition, controlled within the local education school scene and without full participation by more senior competitors. With the regular, more established crews in Singapore hindering newcomers' from joining bigger competitions, FUYO Inter-School puts across the basic rule that every participant in the same team MUST be of the same school as of 7th Febuary 2009.

This basic rule limits the more senior regulars from sending in full teams, and individual regulars from schools can then inspire their schoolmates / dancemates to pick up, learn, share, and understand the art and culture of B-boying. In the event whereby 3 or more members are senior regulars from the same crew (Enemy Ground Crew, Floor Techniques Crew, FUYO and Radikal Forze Crew), the team is limited to a maximum of 2 senior members from ANY of these senior crew.

Long term goal is to establish a better understanding of B-boying among students, dancers and institutions, and educating the general public and its practitioners that B-boying is as safe as any other sport or dance genre.

There will be 1 main item, and 1 side item in this event; namely "3v3 Competition" and "Seven2Smoke" respectively. In between rounds, the B-boys and B-girls will have the chance to mingle and exchange pointers on the dance floor through "cyphers".

Guest performers from various institutions are invited to perform and showcase their talent and inspire the younger participants and their peers.

Workshops, Clinics, Courses and Movie Screenings

Along with the primary objective of FUYO Inter-School to help every individual to improve, here are some workshops, clinics, courses and even movie screenings for schools and public.

3.0hr Technique & Knowledge & Movie Screening Clinic (open to public):
11Jan, 2-5pm, Singapore Management University, $5.00/student, 0/40
18Jan, 2-5pm, Singapore Management University, $5.00/student, 0/40

Open to the public, this technique and knowledge clinic is held at the Singapore Management University and conducted by Bboy Mahmud, Judge of FUYO Inter-School 2008 and member of Radikal Forze, Mahmud will be sharing his knowledge on Bboying, and providing valuable help on techniques to everyone for this 1 hour clinic. Thereafter, students get to watch and understand from a Movie Screening of "Freshest Kids".

Techniques taught in 2008 Workshop includes the following:
Back & Forth, sling, slingback, cc, reverse cc, kickspin, hook and sling, cock screw & spinup, juggling, russian, kneedrops variations, pretzels, knee pretzels.

Usually an assembly or lunch-time slot, FUYO Inter-School provides Showcase and Knowledge Demonstrations for public and corperate clients. With a 30min long demonstration on Bboying and Hiphop culture, together with a short Q&A session at the end, students are able to experience upfront personally the bboying culture, and have brief questions answered by a professional panel.

A 4.0hrs crash course workshop for students taking part in FUYO Inter-School, this course is catered for schools and is to be held within the school premises. Syllabus to cover Battling and Bboying Knowledge, to strenghten bboys/bgirls and better prepare them for competition. Conducted either by Bboy Sayliang (Floor Techniques Crew / Natasha Studio Crew), Bboy Mahmud (Radikal Forze / Enemy Ground Crew) or Bboy Larry (Natasha Studio Crew / Style Groovaz Crew), subjected to availablity of instructors.

08 x 1.5hr Technique, Battle & Knowledge Course (open to schools only):

Popular Culture Training Centre to be set up

Come 2011, a new hub will be launched to specifically train Singapore youths in skills such as breakdancing and rapping.

This Popular Culture Training Centre will be built at a cost of about 4 million dollars.

Many Singaporean youths, it seems, now aspire to be just like the "cool" characters they see on their tv screens - the very same ones who grace the glossy pages of entertainment magazines.

This future hub will provide the proper training and guidance for them.

Annie Pek, who's the founder of the Singapore Street Festival, is involved in this project.

She says, the centre will also cater to youths who are less academically inclined.

"Why wait for them to be delinquents, but to get them engaged before all these happen. Singapore has so many art schools. We want to create something that's for the pop culture. (So where will this new school be?) At the moment, we are communicating with *scape, to see how we can do our setup there."

The new *scape Youth Hub beside Orchard Cineleisure will be ready in early 2010.

"We will be raising funds through shows. We will create our own shows. Mr Teo agreed that he will do something for it. We are trying to approach Indranee Rajah who will sing for us and Penny Low said that she will do something as well. We will speak to these MPs and see how they could do something for the youth channel here."

SINGAPORE - Aspiring young dancers, rappers and singers can look forward to a new training hub in popular culture, come 2011.

Initiated by the non-profit organisation Singapore Street Festival, the centre will be a platform for youths seeking an avenue to hone their skills in areas such as breakdancing and hip hop.

"Singapore has so many arts schools so we want to create something for the popular culture. Also, some of the performers from the festival are not so academically inclined so we want to facilitate these people too," said Ms Annie Pek, the organisation's founder, at the launch of registration for this year's Singapore Street Festival. It will be held from May 24 to June 8.

Currently, youths looking to be trained are referred to various trainers or community centres. But such private coaching is expensive and Ms Pek hopes that the cost can be reduced with this new centre, which will be heavily subsidised by the organisation.

"It's cheaper for them to go to the school rather than to a private trainer, or to LaSalle College of the Arts or the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts," she said.

Mentors at the centre will include singer Robert Fernando and half of the centre will be set aside for members or students to use, at a subsidised price or even for free. The other half will be used for commercial purposes.

Initial set-up costs could amount to $1.5 million and facilitating costs for the studios and equipment could hit $4 million, said Ms Pek. The money needed will be raised through gala shows.

Several Members of Parliament, such as Ms Indranee Rajah and Ms Penny Low, and Mr Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, will be performing as part of the fund-raising efforts, said Ms Pek.

The organisers are talking to *Scape about a possible location for the training centre.

As for this year's street festival, Ms Pek said two competitions will be part of the festivities for the first time — a yoyo competition where the winner will represent Singapore in the Asia Pacific Yoyo competition next year, and a virtual online game "Power Adventure" competition.

Singer Liyana Abdul Jabbar, who has been performing at the festival since its inaugural year in 2002, feels it has provided her with many opportunities — through contacts provided by the Singapore Street Festival — to perform in various events, such as the National Day Parade.

Q: "Why is it FUYO Inter-School and no longer Floor Skillz Inter-School?"

A: With the withdrawal of Verveparade from organising its annual international Floor Skillz Asia, the intellectual property of registered brandname "Floor Skillz" is not to be used in any B-boying / Breakdancing events until further notice and settlement from Verveparade.

Q: "Can students from different schools join together as a team?"

A: Nope.

Q: "We're all from the same Cluster / Zone / International / Islamic Religious / etc, can we join together?"

A: Only schools and 'its various types' recognised by Ministry of Education in http://www.moe.gov.sg/ as Pre-School, Primary, Secondary, Pre-University, Post-Secondary, Special Education, Private School, can join together.

Q: "What is the reserve member for?"

A: In the event of an injury or any other form of activity induced during the course of Floor Skillz Inter-School on 7th Febuary 2009 that renders one of the three starting members unable to continue participation, the reserve member is able to replace this member.

Q: "Can we interchange the 3 members with the reserve throughout the competition like substitution?"

A: Once the reserve member comes into play and participates in ANY battles, no other substitution is allowed, even if the original team member recovers and is able to participate.

Q: "I was from XX XX XXX School in 2008 and am waiting to go into another school this 2009. Can I still participate as XX XX XXX School with my friends?"

A: No Alumnis are allowed. As of 2009, Floor Skillz Inter-School strictly enforces the rule that every individual team member of a team MUST be of the SAME school, and are current students of that school as of 7th Febuary 2009. Unless the individual is able to seek approval / permission / letter / proof from XX XX XXX School that he/she is still a student of that School.

Q: "I was from a school in 2008 and am waiting to go into XX XX XXX School this 2009. I have been accepted into XX XX XXX School, but am not schooling there yet. Can I join?"

A: Same as the previous answer, unless the individual has proof of admission into that school, such as a letter of admission, etc, he/she cannot join Floor Skillz Inter-School as an unconfirmed student of XX XX XXX School.

Q: "Where do I get the tickets for this event from?"

A: Door sales open at 7th Febuary 2009 6pm. No pre-sale tickets are needed. Please do not purchase any other unauthorized tickets from any individual / organization.

Q: "Can I have a discount / free entry because I'm from XXXX School?"

A: Admissions are all strictly SG$15.00 for spectators and SG$20.00 for teams. Upon request, an official letter from FUYO Productions is available for students who wish to have their schools rememburse their admission fees after the event. Students need to pay for their own entry first, before the official letter can be emailed to them on a later date.

Q: "I'm from XXXX Dance Studio, can i have free entry?"

A: With only Singapore Management University, FUYO Productions and Natasha Studio sponsoring this event, any other Dance Studio will not have a discounted / free entry.

Q: "Are you married yet? Can I get Ang Baos from you this year at Floor Skillz Inter-School?"

A: ... No Kelvin, cannot. I'm not married yet.

Q: "Can foreign teams from Malaysia / Thailand / etc join?"

A: Sadly, no. Due to the objectives of Floor Skill Inter-School, only local (Singapore) Schools registered with MOE can participate in the competition. But foreign teams from other countries are encourage to join in the cyphers, with possible exhibition battles upon request and prior planning.

Q: "ehh..... Is this competition by all or by category?"

A: There's no division of levels, such as Division C, Division B, Division A, Open etc. As long as you're in a School recognised by MOE, there's even possibility that a university team may go up against a primary school team.

Q: "My school only has myself and another bboy/bgirl. Can we join as two members only?"

A: Yes. Joining with only two members will self-impose a handicap on your team. Team payment will still stand at SG$12.00/team and rounds per battle will stands the same. Good luck with 2 members.

Q: "How about just myself? One member?"

A: Nope.

Q: "I would like to sign up for the Seven2Smoke, where do I go to sign up?"

A: Only TEN B-boys / B-girls will be selected for Seven2Smoke

A: Basically, its a 1v1 winner-stay-loser-out battle, whereby the winner is either the person who won SEVEN 1v1 battles in a row, or with the most wins (and straight wins) within a timespan of 15minutes.

As of 2009, FUYO Inter-School will be having its admission rate for public spectators at SG$15.00 each (previously SG$5.00) and registration fees of SG$20.00 per team (previously SG$12.00 per team)

Reasons would be as follow:
1. I really can't go on losing $2,000 to $3,000 per year
2. Am trying to keep the T-shirt cost as close as possible to the production cost of T-shirts
3. No intent of getting any commercial sponsorship as I wanna keep this event as REAL as possible.

About FUYO Inter-School 2008

FUYO Inter-School B-boy Battle (previously known as Floorskillz Inter-School B-boy Battle) is an annual B-boying (commonly known as Breakdancing) Event organized to provide a controlled platform for our local B-boying community to improve.

First started in 2007 with sponsorship from FUYO Productions and Verveparade, this event is aimed to bring about the future generations of Singapore Bboying scene. Specially tailored for Singapore's younger generation of dancers, this event serves as a official competition for schools to participate and utilize their enthusiasm for B-boying in a controlled and yet expressive manner.

Into its 2nd year, FUYO Inter-School B-boy Battle 2008 serves to help Singapore school students who aspire to be more professional B-boys work towards their dreams in an official competition, controlled within the local education school scene and without full participation by more senior competitors. With the regular, more established crews in Singapore hindering newcomers' from joinin bigger competitions, FUYO Inter-School puts across the basic rule that every participant in the same team MUST be of the same school as of 15th March 2008.

This basic rule limits the more senior regulars from sending in full teams, and individual regulars from schools can then inspire their schoolmates / dancemates to pick up, learn, share, and understand the art and culture of B-boying.

Long term goal is to establish a better understanding of B-boying among students, dancers and institutions, and educating the general public and its practitioners that B-boying is as safe as any other sport or dance genre.

There will only be 1 main item in this event; namely "3v3 Competition". In between rounds, the B-boys and B-girls will have the chance to mingle and exchange pointers on the dance floor through "cyphers". Still under discussion, winners of FUYO Inter-School will have the chance to advance directly into the Top 16 of Floor Skillz Asia 2008.

Guest performers are invited from schools to showcase their talent and inspire the younger participants and their peers.
